The first few weeks after Bandit joined our family, I started looking around YouTube on commands to train him. The hardest and most useful one is the “Leave It” command. Since there are so many videos out there, I’ll just summarize the basic here:
- Train with food – we always train Bandit with his kibbles. It slows him down because he’s being hand fed but it always makes him more motivated.
- Start slow – we put the kibble on the floor and when Bandit tries to take it, we’ll stop him by putting our hand in front of his face/nose and say the command “Leave It”. Wait a second or two, then reward him. It’ll be tough at first because the puppy will always want the food. But eventually they’ll get it.
Once Bandit understands the “Leave It” command, we extend the length of when he have to leave something alone. Now I can leave a whole container of kibbles in front of Bandit and he won’t dive in. We also started putting kibbles on his paws and head just to see if he can concentrate.
